In his message on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Democracy in Greece, the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias, said that Greece's steadfast goal was termination of the
Turkish occupation and a solution to the problem founded on
international law and the UN resolutions. The European Union, he said, has a responsibility to contributing to
the "therapy of this wound, which comprises one of the greatest shames
of global civilisatoin".
"The
key to a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue is in Ankara's
hands, but for the time being we see no desire on Turkey's part to
overcome and transcend anachronistic percpetions and ethnicist
rationale. Quite the contrary, we are following with worry the
escatlation of the provocations in the Aegean and the constant
projection of unilateral and historically-unfounded claims".
But
Turkey is deluding itself if it believes that it can bend our
determination to defend and safeguard our rights with threats and
overflights over our islands, Papoulias warned.
In his message
, President Papoulias spoke of deep crisis of people'Αs
confidence in politics, underlining the need for redetermination of
rules. The character of celebration this year has changed following a
decision by the President of the Republic. It was attended with
personal invitations by representatives of political, judicial,
religious and military leadership and representatives of resistance
organizations.
A plain event with only 1.200 guests was held on Friday to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Democracy.
Grand receptions are incompatible with the spirit of the struggle
against dictatorship, they provoke public feelings and are against the
measure which should determine the behavior of the political world said
Mr. Papoulias in his message.
The President of the Republic spoke highly of the protagonists in
that period who put their lives at risk for the sake of freedom and
democracy.
